Silence

corinblu:

Corin smiled brightly when the pencil and pad of sticky notes was produced. He took them with a light bob of his head and then he began to scribble on the sticky note. He was focusing on his writing, he knew very well that his writing was atrocious but since this was the only way he could communicate.

When he was finished he handed the pad back to the other. On the top note Corin had written a small letter, in his messy handwriting. It read: “Hello, my name is Corin. I am a spy for the BLU team, a pleasure to meet you. Who are you?”

Benji wiped the lenses of his glasses with his shirt end and put them back on his head as the other handed the pad of sticky notes back to him. His eyes lit up as he read what he had written. The handwriting was a tad hard to read, but he was used to reading and much preferred this way of communication over speaking out loud. Corin. He mouthed the syllables slightly to himself and smiled. He was in fact, on the the BLU team, and a spy at that!

Twirling the pencil in his hand, he wrote a response: “My name is Benjamin, but call me Benji. I’m a new pyro for BLU. Nice to meet you too!”

He added a smiley face at the end out of habit and tapped the pencil to his nose, thinking. Quickly, he added: “Is something the matter?”

The Pyro tensed on reflex as the other scooted toward him. His nerves were making him shiver a bit… though perhaps that was because he was starting to feel the chill of the night set in. Who knows.

He eyed the other inquisitively as the tentaspy gestured to his throat and shook his head. A soft smile crept up on his face as he shrugged in indifference and gestured to his own mouth. It’s okay. No worry.

A shy blush flared up on his cheeks. He looked down, nuzzling the side of his knee with his chin and traced the lines in the wood with his fingertip.

“Oh…” The noise squeaked out, it was rough and hard to even understand. He frowned and rubbed his throat lightly. He was obviously annoyed that he couldn’t speak, it was hard to not just talk and converse. A grunt escaped him and he slumped backward.

He twitched his tentacles lightly and then reached into his coat. Did he have anything to write on? Pawing around more he eventually gave up and huffed, a look of utter frustration crossing his face before he grasped the blue shirt once more.

He mimed his hand out flat and then pretended to write on it, a question in his features. Do you have anything to write with?

The corners of his mouth tugged downward as he watched the tentaspy struggle trying to speak. As unsociable as he was growing up, Benjamin was content without using words if he didn’t have to use them.

The other appeared to be looking for something in his jacket, and realization dawned on him as the tentaspy mimicked a pencil and paper with his hands. He smiled in delight and nodded, digging into the front pocket of his overalls and bringing out a pad of sticky notes and a pencil. The Pyro had a fixation with sticky notes, and he never went anywhere without them.

The Pyro shuffled his feet and wrung his hands together nervously out of habit. He could tell the other Medic didn’t seem too fond of his presence. Toeing the end of his boots together, he held out his hand tentatively and looked down shyly.

He inwardly groaned. The Pyro was shy. Sure. That was a facade. The Pyro wanted to lure him into a false sense of security. A few Pyros had done that to him. One had even grabbed his neck, burning him. Thankfully Respawn was there.

Still, he had to keep in the good graces of BLU, for the moment.

He took his hand, shaking it. “Ja, Ja… gut to meet you. My name ist Aldous Haswell, tvin of ze BLU Medic. Und you ah?”

“Mhm Bnjhmnh,” he replied. He bowed his head head slightly while keeping his eyes on Aldous. He was thankful for the tinted lenses of his gas mask. It was an upside for whenever he needed to socialize; if people couldn’t see how intimidated he was by conversation, then they couldn’t ridicule him for it and use it to their advantage… right?

He made a mental note to be wary of this Medic both on and off the battlefield. His brother seemed welcoming enough, though of course that may be due to the fact that Benjamin was on the same team.

“…Benjamin.” He knew exactly what he was saying. Not bad for being afraid of Pyros, and trying to avoid them. “Zo, Benjamin. New Pyro for BLU, hmmm? I vould avoid my tvin if you could. He ist, vell… it’s juzt bezt not to get attached to him. He ist schtupid, lets his heart zhink for him, und zat ist not how you fight en a var.”

He scoffed. He loathed his brother, wished he were dead.

"Blh." he repeated, nodding in reply. The Pyro frowned and tilted his head to the side as the RED Medic spoke about his brother. There was nothing wrong with making a few friends throughout the base, right? Aldous was on the opposing side, and for all Benjamin knew, he could be trying to place distrust in his own team… but maybe it was nothing more than squabbling siblings.

He licked his lips nervously beneath his mask and wished he had the courage to speak his opinion. Instead, he just rocked on his feet and fiddled with his thumbs behind his back.

"Nss mhthn’ yh, shr."

Benji drew in a sharp breath of air when he realized that he had been spotted. Not like he was exactly hiding from anyone being out in the open… without his mask… He swallowed, trying to force the anxious lump in his throat down. Deep breaths, you’ll be fine.

He bit his lip and tried not to fixate his eyes on the tentacles that made up the man’s lower half and what they might do to him… he shook his head. From the way the other held onto whatever it was in his hand, he was just as nervous as Benji was.

He mentally kicked himself. This was his teammate. He gave a tentative wave back and adjusted his glasses, stepping out onto the bridge and coming to a stop about ten feet from the other. He sat down with his back against the side of the bridge. He hugged his knees to this chest and gave the man a shy smile, burying his chin between his knees.

The tentaspy watched the other silently. Sniffing idly at the air as he tried to force himself to calm. Ilya’s scent still remained in his nose, but the new scent of his teammate was around now. It wasn’t a bad thing, it stopped him from reminiscing.

He scooted up a bit closer before turning his head to the side. How was one supposed to communicate without words? A frown turned his lips down and he pointed at his own throat before pointing to his mouth.

He then shook his head. Cannot talk, he was trying to ‘show’ the words with his body language.

The Pyro tensed on reflex as the other scooted toward him. His nerves were making him shiver a bit… though perhaps that was because he was starting to feel the chill of the night set in. Who knows.

“Benji it ist, zhen. Und, it zeems you do vant a tour. Vell, follow me.”

The Medic gently tugged on the sleeve of his flame retardant suit. He began to walk down the hallway, instantly explaining that down the hall, towards the left, were barracks. To the right was another hallway that lead down to the breakroom.

He lead the Pyro all around, teaching him what each corridor lead to, and where the critical places were. From the messhall to the meeting room, to his own personal barrack to even…the Medbay.

The Pyro grinned as he eagerly followed the Medic down the hallway and around the base, mentally noting where things were. He hoped he didn’t forget anything before he had a chance to jot reminders down on his pad of sticky notes.

He turned to Abel and thanked him for showing him around the base. Now hopefully he wouldn’t get too lost. He peered up at the sign above the Medbay while bouncing slightly on the balls of his feet. Doctors… Benji was all too familiar with them. As a clumsy kid he’d end up in the doc’s office as a “regular customer”.

He hoped that wouldn’t happen too much while he was at Teufort.

Silence

corinblu:

Normally Corin would have noticed company quicker than that. As it was, he didn’t quite realize anyone was there until he happened to glance in that direction. A look of surprise crossed his face and suddenly he clung tightly to the shirt that was in his hands. As if it would offer some sort of protection. His tentacles curled up and he gave a soft whimper.

Yet, he realized this person didn’t mean any harm. They looked… Nervous? His own nervous energy made him frown as he shifted to sit up. His yellow eyes never left the other man.

Silence… It remained. His throat hurt too bad to talk, he simply waved and held the shirt tight against his chest. Like a security blanket.

Silence

corinblu:

Corin was laid out on the bridge between bases. He was on his back and his eyes were locked onto the stars. He could barely see them between the slats of the roof, the old covered bridge needed to be re-roofed… But it didn’t really matter, he could see bullet holes where a Heavy had shot up through the roof to get a particularly annoying scout.

A sigh escaped him. He was only wearing his suit-jacket and turtleneck, no gloves or balaclava. Both had been left in… Ilya’s… room. He choked back any noise and held a blue shirt to his face. It still smelled like him. Oil, grease, sweat, lemons… No, he hadn’t washed with lemon soap… That was Ilya’s scent. Crisp, clean, fresh, distinct.

He sighed and held the shirt to his chest, once again looking to the stars.

Benjamin stood behind the post of the bridge, toeing the dirt with his boot. His suit was making him sweat uncomfortably, so he opted to leave it and his mask in his room. Clad only in a sleeveless shirt and a pair of overalls tied at the waist, Benji felt naked, and he wanted nothing more than to run back to his room to avoid being caught off guard by curious and inquisitive teammate. He highly respected his team, but the thought of… the thought of them trying to coax him into any sort of conversation made him freeze up.

The only reason why he hadn’t hightailed it back to his room was the figure sprawled out on the bridge. He hadn’t yet met this man, but from the color of his suit he could tell he was one of his teammates.

Standing at the foot of the bridge, he wrung his wrists in his hands. He could almost feel the sense of loneliness out there… Benji didn’t know what was wrong, but he was raised believing that no one should feel alone. He knew he couldn’t offer much… hell, it might even land him his first trip to respawn, but it was always better to have tried than to have not.

Immediately Benjamin felt an immense sense of relief. He knew his speech was hard to understand from his mask, but he couldn’t communicate without it. While he was far more open to people now than he had been as a child, he became reliant on his mask to talk to others. Knowing that someone could understand his muffled replies made things a bit easier.

“Abhl.”

He repeated the name, lips quirking up beneath his mask as it rolled off his tongue. Benjamin looked around curiously and scratched the side of his head. This was his first time stationed at this particular base, and he didn’t know his way around.

“Ja, zat’s correct! ‘Abel’. Do you go by any nicknames as vell? Or juzt Benjamin?”

He automatically liked this Pyro. He could sense an air of friendliness surrounding him. Sometimes the old Medic could read people well, sense their personalities if you will, and this new recruit had a nice, sunny sort of feel to him. sunny, despite being shy.

Seeing him glance around nervously, he smiled. “Oh, Benjamin, you’re new zo, if you vant, I can zhow you around. Haff to explored ze base?”

Nickname. The Pyro tapped the side of his his cheek in thought before shrugging his shoulders and looking toward the floor.

"…Bhnji."

No one had referred to him as Benji since he was a child. Thinking back, no one really called him by his given name either. He shook his head free of his thoughts when he heard the Medic’s offer to show him around the base. Drawing his shoulders forward shyly, he nodded slowly in reply. He rubbed the back of his hand with his thumb. Yes. A tour of the place would be helpful.

((good night, everyone! I have work later today and must get some sleep…))

((Thank you to all new followers. C: For those of you who don’t know, this is praefinicky. I follow a lot of you on my main account because I love reading everyone’s RPs and watching you guys interact this way. I have never RPed before now, and I’m happy that I finally mustered up the courage to step in with a character of my own.))

((I will write more about Benjamin later on his about page. Right now the only things that need to be known about his character is that he is extremely shy without his mask on and suffers from selective mutism. He is more open to people and will only talk out loud with his mask on. I’ll more than likely switch to typing his dialogue “normal” with his mask on, just because I know trying to understand mumbles is a pain in the ass. I’ll try to put it in the RP or the tags if he has his mask on or off, but know that if he’s actually speaking, then it’s on.))

((Benjamin also wears thick glasses when he doesn’t have his mask on to help with his farsightedness. I’ll draw up a reference of what he looks like soon too. C:))
